Curt Jürgens is Karl Stromberg

Curt Jürgens was a renowned German actor who appeared in more than 150 movies. One of his famous roles was as James Bond villain Karl Stromberg in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).

Jürgens was born on 13th December 1915 in Munich, Germany. Some of his best known German films include The Devils' General (1955), and The Royal Game (1960).

Curt Jürgens' acted in many international movies including The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958), The Longest Day (1960), Lord Jim (1965), and Battle of Britain (1969).

In the popular James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) Jürgens played the character of millionaire shipping tycoon Karl Stromberg. In this film he starred with Roger Moore and Barbara Bach, and is remembered for being one of the inventive villains in the series.

Curt Jürgens died in Vienna, Austria, on 18th June 1982.

Karl Stromberg

Karl Stromberg is the key villain in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. He is portrayed by German actor Curt Jürgens.

Stromberg is a wealthy shipping industrialist who resides in Atlantis, a submersible base off the coast of Sardinia, Italy. The advanced complex contains his home, marine laboratories, and business headquarters.

He plans to wipe out the human race and start an underwater empire. He has a state-of-the-art submarine tracking system produced for him by Dr Bechmann (Cyril Shaps) and Professor Markovitz (Milo Sperber).

Stromberg uses the system to capture nuclear submarines with his giant tanker the Liparus. After seizing Soviet and British submarines, he plans nuclear attacks on Moscow and New York in the belief that a global war will result.

However, his scheming plan is threatened when a microfilm of the tracking system is put for sale on the open market by his secretary (Marilyn Galsworthy). Stromberg takes swift revenge by giving her a gruesome death in his shark pool.

Major Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) of the KGB and James Bond (Roger Moore) of MI6 learn of the existence of the microfilm, and attempt to get the hands on the device.

Karl Stromberg then instructs his henchmen Jaws (Richard Kiel) and Sandor (Milton Reid) to eliminate anyone who comes into contact with the microfilm. Later he enjoys killing Dr Bechmann and Professor Markovitz by blowing up their helicopter as it leaves his base.

When Stromberg is visited by Bond and Amasova under false pretences, he orders for them to be killed. Naomi (Caroline Munro), Stromberg's personal pilot and assistant, and Jaws, attack Amasova and 007 in their Lotus Esprit, but ultimately fail.

James Bond and Anya Amasova join a U.S. submarine in order to attack the Liparus vessel. However, Stromberg captures the submarine and kidnaps Amasova. He then prepares the launch of two nuclear missiles.

Stromberg travels to Atlantis with Amasova whilst Bond is detained with U.S. submarine personnel. 007 soon manages to escape and directs an assault on the Liparus with Captain Carter (Shane Rimmer). The pair re-programme the missiles to destroy each submarine, before obliterating Stromberg's supertanker.

James Bond then travels to Atlantis and executes Karl Stromberg in his dining room. Agent 007 then has a vicious battle with Jaws before escaping with Major Amasova via an escape pod. Stromberg's remarkable ocean home is then destroyed by torpedoes U.S. submarine.
