James Bond Gadgets and Weapons are Vital to Agent
007's Success
James Bond gadgets and weaponry are a key component of the 007 film series and
are often responsible for Bond's survival and success on his various missions.
In the 1960s some of the top gadgets featured included a stiletto shoe in From Russia with
Love (1963), a seagull snorkel in Goldfinger (1964), a
trapdoor slide in You Only Live
Twice (1967), and an ingenious safe cracker in On Her
Majesty's Secret Service (1969).
Major Boothroyd, known as Q, became known for designing ingenious James Bond
gadgets in his amazing workshops. Q is also remembered for setting up his
laboratories in a variety of locations including Egypt, Hong Kong, and Rio de
Janeiro.
Some of the James Bond gadgets used in the 1970s include a voice simulator in
Diamonds Are
Forever (1971), a shark pellet in Live and Let Die
(1973), and a ski pole rocket in The Spy Who Loved
Me (1977).
The moment James Bond visits Q's laboratory to be instructed on the gadgets
for the upcoming mission is one to be cherished. While Q takes great pleasure in
showing Agent 007 his latest innovations, he knows the gadgets are likely to be
destroyed when James Bond uses them in the field.
During the 1980s some of the great James Bond gadgets included a visual
identigraph in For Your Eyes
Only (1981), a cheque copier in A View to a Kill
(1985), and a manta ray disguise in Licence to Kill
(1989).
Using a variety of field equipment, Agent 007 relishes the risks of living in
the modern world. He also knows that many of the James Bond gadgets created by Q
have multiple uses - a camera can be a recording device and a mobile phone can
be used to drive a car.
In recent years some of the sophisticated James Bond gadgets include a ski
suit escape pod in The World Is
Not Enough (1999), a pair of virtual reality glasses in Die Another
Day (2002), and a smart table in Quantum of
Solace (2008).
